Tell us about your services.
Focused Artists is literary management company representing multi-hyphenate talents. The agency was founded in 2018 representing creators for film and television before expanding to literary works in 2020.
What is your background and how is it helpful?
I have a master’s degree in library science and worked in both school and public libraries before transitioning into publishing. I have organized adult book clubs and children's storytimes and have recognize stores that will fit in among book club titles. I understand the positive impacts books have on individuals and communities and advocate for reading and literacy programs.
What is your approach to selecting writers to work with?
When a manuscript grabs my attention, I will request more of the author's work to review. If I feel the submission is one I want to represent, I set up a phone call with the author to discuss their work and other works in progress. I want to ensure that our partnership will go beyond one book and that our personalities will work well together.
Describe how your organization would work with a writer.
As an agent, I create a list editors and publishing houses I feel are a good fit the manuscript. I create a pitch and/or pitch deck depending on the project and submit to the chosen editors. Once a publisher buys the manuscript, I review the contract and negotiate terms in the author's favor.
What is your advice for a writer or author looking to work with you?
Know your craft and only submit your most polished work. Take courses, watch webinars, attend conferences, do everything you can to enhance your skills and learn the business of writing.
