How did you become a published author?
I completed a novel in 2017 that, while I approached agents, was being overtaken by events. I decided to self-publish to avoid parts of the story being seen as derivative. I enjoyed some modest success and decided to learn all I could about self-publishing to improve my sales. I am now working on my tenth novel and have a devoted and growing following.
What is your advice for someone trying to get published?
Unless you have the skills and resources to learn all the aspects of self-publishing--not just writing, but editing, designing cover and interior, marketing, and managing your publications across multiple platforms, I would first try to find an agent to get traditionally published. You can meet them at conferences such as Pennwriters and get ten minutes of time to pitch them. Be realistic, however. Publishing is in upheaval and your odds of success are not great, no matter your skill level. Even if you find a publisher, expect to do more of your own marketing than authors twenty years ago ever did. If you decide to self-publish, study the field, learn all you can, and expect to pay for services you lack the skills to do well.
